Cardinal Fastener Inc. is one of the largest fastener manufacturers of large diameter, hot forged bolts in America. Based in Winona, MN with additional operations 90 minutes west of Chicago in Loves Park, IL, Cardinal Fastener can produce a variety of bolt head styles and diameters up to 4-1/2" or M72, all described in its Birdie Chart.
Cardinal prides itself on short lead times (as fast as same-day) with unsurpassed quality matched by the lowest manufacturing cost of any hot forger in North America. This quick turnaround is supported by a very large inventory of forged blanks, available in a variety of materials and grades to meet SAE, ASTM, and ISO standards, including all grades of steel, high strength alloys such as B16 and A286, 300 and 400 Series stainless, and exotic alloys.
Cardinal Fastener experienced operators manufacture parts to extremely close tolerances using single blow open die and two-stroke closed die hot forging presses, induction heating units with optical pyrometers, cut-threading and roll-threading (before or after heat treating). Using its vast inventory of blanks, Cardinal offers cut-threading on demand, providing 97% on time performance for same day or next day shipments. Cardinal also offers multiple CNC lathes for specialty parts, and its products meet SAE, ASTM and ISO standards, and encompass many grades of steel and high temperature alloys.
On forged-to-order fasteners, Cardinal can deliver in as little as 3 to 5 days, drawing from hundreds of stock dies, or from custom dies it creates in a fraction of the time of cold forming dies. This approach makes Cardinal very cost competitive for both large-run and small-run MRO (maintenance, repair and operations) requirements.
Cardinal Fastener has a history of internal development and innovation, going back to 2001 when a team of Cardinal engineers and operators perfected a proprietary manufacturing process to hot forge cap screws to required dimensional tolerances without any secondary manufacturing processes. Cardinal also designed a manufacturing process that eliminates the possibility of steel inclusions in the roll threading operation, insuring that safety-critical fasteners are the safest in the industry. In 2015, Cardinal Fastener became part of Fastenal.
Cardinal was one of the first fastener manufacturers in the world to receive ISO 9001:2008 certification. As an ISO 9001:2008 manufacturer, Cardinal maintains full material traceability all the way back to the mill, with rigorous incoming inspections, chemical analysis of all raw materials, Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), and lot code stamping.
